Giving

“Each man should give what he has decided in heart to give,
not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves
a cheerful giver.” -2 Corinthians 9:7

The world around us is self-oriented, and our culture actually celebrates selfishness and greed. We are among the very richest people on the planet today, living in what is by far the wealthiest country in the history of the world. Given all we have been blessed with, you would think we would be extremely generous with our wealth. Yet, did you know that the average American in the Great Depression gave more as a percentage of income than the average Christian does today? Something is terribly broken.

At Sunlight, we hope to spark a movement of unusual generosity in our generation. Such a movement, we believe, could radically change our world! As a starting point, let’s begin with cultivating the Biblical practice of tithing, giving the first 10 percent of all God gives us back to Him.

There are four main reasons the Bible says we should give:

God is abundantly generous. In fact, He withholds nothing from us. “For God so loved the world, he gave His only Son” (John 3:16). We, on the other hand, are not good at giving generously. If you want to get better at something, you have to practice. For instance, if you want to get better at running or playing a musical instrument, you have to practice. Tithing helps us flex and work out our giving muscles. The regular practice of tithing makes us more like God and more prepared for situations that call upon us to be generous.

Tithing is the practice of giving back to God the first ten percent of what He gives you. Often however, if we give at all, we end up giving God the leftovers – whatever remains after we have spent our resources on everything else. But if we give God only the leftovers, what does that say about how we value Him? Once our eyes are opened through salvation to God’s supreme value and worth, it is only fitting that we reorder our priorities and values to reflect our faith. Tithing is a tangible way to put God first in our everyday lives.

Faith understands that God supplies all our needs. Often, the main reason we don’t tithe is fear that if we carve out the first ten percent, there will not be enough remaining to cover the rest of our expenses and needs. But tithing is one faith issue where God says, “Test me in this, and see if I don’t pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it” (Mal. 3:6). Frankly, it takes faith to believe what God says in order to take up God’s test. When reality confirms what faith expects, faith naturally grows. In the future we will be more ready to trust other promises of God. Try tithing, and see how your faith grows!

When we tithe, we directly support the work of Christ’s church and God’s kingdom. It takes resources to plant churches, reach the lost and carry out the work of the Gospel. Be blessed by seeing what God can do when an unusual movement of generosity happens here in South Florida!

Discover the Joy of Giving!

STEP 1: Determine what 10% of your income is.

STEP 2: Decide whether to give on a weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or other basis.

STEP 3: There are many ways to give your tithe: check, cash in provided envelopes, or electronic giving.

Electronic giving has become commonplace for paying bills and mortgages.  Now you can give to the church electronically too.  This can be done simply by using your bank’s Bill Pay service to set up a recurring donation to our church.

You may use the links at the top right of this page to make one-time or recurring payments by using your credit or debit card. These online donations are securely processed by PayPal. (Note: We do not encourage using credit cards to make contributions unless you are able to pay off the balance fully each month.)

All giving is tax-deductible, as Sunlight is a 501(c)(3) organization.  All offerings are placed in our general fund unless otherwise specified. Financial statements are available upon request.
